You can order ready-to-eat meats, cooked seafood, sliced or chunk cheese, bread, permitted snacks, and other qualifying foods for someone in a New York State correctional facility. Each item must meet NYS DOCCS ingredient, packaging, and size requirements, and the recipient must be eligible to receive it. Food packages must arrive directly from a vendor.

What food can you send in a NYS inmate package?
The following examples come from the food list in NYS DOCCS Directive 4911, Attachment A-1. A food category being listed does not mean every product in that category qualifies.
- Meat and chicken: Ready-to-eat products, including precooked, cured, or smoked meats and cold cuts.
- Seafood: Cooked, cured, or smoked products without shells.
- Cheese: Sliced or chunk cheese.
- Bread and snacks: Qualifying bread, crackers, cookies, potato chips, and similar products.
- Pouched foods: Up to 16 ounces each; the manufacturer's label must not require cooking. Microwavable containers are allowed.
- Fruit and vegetables: Check the specific restrictions in Attachment A-1, including preparation requirements.

Food packaging checklist: check before you buy
Directive 4911 sets these packaging requirements:
- No cans or glass containers.
- Commercial airtight packaging is required for foods other than fresh fruit and vegetables; examples include heat-sealed bags and vacuum-sealed pouches.
- Paper, plastic, or foil container seals are restricted. A retail container being unopened does not automatically make it acceptable.
- Boxed food needs a qualifying inner package. A glued cardboard box alone is not enough; the food inside must be commercially heat-sealed.
- Keep the commercially printed ingredient list on the packaging.
For example, a canned product and a pouched version of the same food are different purchasing decisions. Check the pouch's ingredients, size, and preparation instructions too.
Which foods should you leave out?
DOCCS prohibits homemade, restaurant, bakery, and deli-prepared foods; frozen foods; alcohol ingredients; poppy seeds; and foods containing marshmallows. Other restrictions apply to enriched or energy mixes and hot peppers. Review the full directive for the complete list and exceptions.
A grocery item being available online does not establish that a facility can accept it. If a label or container is unclear, ask before ordering.
How many food packages can an inmate receive in NY?
The general rule in Directive 4911 is three food packages per month with a combined weight of no more than 40 pounds. Packages count when the facility receives them. Recipient status and facility restrictions can affect eligibility.
Coordinate with other family members before ordering. Ask whether an order will arrive in multiple shipments, and keep track of all food packages expected that month.
If you use the CIG Essentials Walmart+ & Sam's Club Premier Pickup Service, products purchased through those retailers are not automatically included in the package weight displayed in your CIG Essentials cart. Account for those purchases separately.
Can you send refrigerated meat, seafood, or cheese?
Some qualifying products need temperature-conscious shipping. CIG Essentials uses thermal insulated shipping for appropriate perishable orders. Confirm the product's handling requirements and shipping arrangements before buying; insulation does not replace the facility's acceptance requirements.
Can you use EBT/SNAP for inmate food packages?
