NYS Inmate Package Weight Limit: The 40-Pound Rule Explained

One of the most important things to understand before sending food to a loved one in a New York State correctional facility is the package weight limit.

Under current general NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision guidance, incarcerated individuals may receive three food packages per month with a combined food-package weight not exceeding 40 pounds.

Because package eligibility can vary by status, program or facility, families should always confirm current requirements before placing an order.

Is the 40-Pound Limit Per Package?

No. The general 40-pound limit applies to the combined weight of food packages received during the month, not necessarily to each individual package.

That means families should keep track of food being sent from CIG Essentials and any other vendor so they do not accidentally exceed the recipient's applicable monthly limit.

How Many Food Packages Can a NYS Inmate Receive?

Current general NYS DOCCS guidance allows up to three food packages per month, subject to exceptions and individual eligibility.

Reception status, in-transit status, certain programs, loss-of-package sanctions and other circumstances can affect package privileges.

Why Package Weight Tracking Matters

It is easy to focus on individual products without realizing how quickly meats, beverages, produce and other groceries can add up.

Before completing an order, add together the weight of all food items being sent to the recipient during that month.

Combining CIG Essentials With Walmart or Sam's Club Purchases

If you use the CIG Essentials Walmart+ & Sam's Club Premier Pickup Service, remember that retailer purchases are separate from merchandise added directly to your CIG Essentials cart.

The weight shown in the CIG Essentials cart does not automatically include products purchased directly from Walmart or Sam's Club. Customers should calculate the combined food weight before completing the package.

Do Non-Food Items Count Toward the Food Weight Limit?

NYS DOCCS distinguishes food packages from non-food packages and articles. Current rules should always be reviewed before sending clothing, hygiene products or other non-food items.

Check Current NYS DOCCS Rules Before Ordering

Package rules can change and exceptions may apply. For the most current state guidance, review the NYS DOCCS Family Handbook and current Directive 4911 information.

You can also use the CIG Essentials NYS Inmate Locator page to confirm recipient information before ordering.
